"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God." Psalm 42:11 (KJV)

There are mornings when you wake up and something just feels heavy. You can't always name it. It's not one big thing; it's the accumulation of everything. The unanswered prayers. The situation that still hasn't changed. The relationship that's still strained. The dream that still hasn't come to pass. And somewhere in the middle of all that weight, your soul starts to wonder: Is God still working? Does He still see me?

The psalmist knew that feeling. He didn't write Psalm 42 from a mountaintop; he wrote it from the valley. He was downcast. He was disturbed on the inside. But here's what I love about this man of God: he didn't just sit in it. He preached to himself. He looked his own soul in the face and said, "Hope thou in God." That's a discipline right there. Because hope isn't always a feeling you wake up with; sometimes it's a decision you have to make before the feeling catches up.

The word "hope" in this context isn't wishful thinking. It's confident expectation. It's anchoring yourself to the character of God when your circumstances are screaming something different. It's saying, "I don't see how this is going to work out, but I know Who holds it."

Here's the practical word for today: Don't wait until you feel hopeful to act hopeful. Start your morning by speaking to your soul instead of letting your soul speak to you. Open your mouth and remind yourself, out loud if you have to, that the same God who brought you through last year is the same God who's walking with you through today. His track record doesn't lie. His mercies are new this morning (Lamentations 3:23). He finishes what He starts (Philippians 1:6).

The psalmist said, "I shall yet praise him." Yet. That little word is doing a lot of work. It means: "Not yet in my feelings, but I'm calling it in by faith." So wherever you are today, whatever you're carrying, let this be your declaration: Hope is not lost. God is not finished. Your praise is not behind you; it is still ahead of you. Hold on. The dawn is coming.

"Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost." Romans 15:13 (KJV)

Hi, I'm Ryan Vanderford, and I'm so glad you're here. For over a decade, I've had the incredible privilege of serving as the pastor of Hope Chapel, a community built on faith, love, and the belief that hope is never out of reach. Ministry is more than a calling for me. It's a daily reminder that God meets us right where we are. Through every season of life, the highs and the hard days, I've seen firsthand what hope can do in a person's heart, and that's what A Moment of Hope is all about. My prayer is that this little corner of the internet feels like a warm cup of coffee and an encouraging word from a friend. Whether you're walking closely with God or just beginning to find your way, you belong here. So pull up a chair. Let's find hope together.
