when you feel like nothing...the value of nothing

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 (KJV)

There are moments in life when we feel like nothing. Not enough. Not qualified. Not valuable. Maybe you have looked at your past, your mistakes, or your current situation and quietly believed, “I do not have anything to offer.”

But what if that feeling, what you have labeled as nothing, is exactly where God begins?

The word “Gentile” in Scripture originally meant simply nations or people. But over time, it became a label that separated people. Us versus them. Insiders versus outsiders. And that is what labels do. They do not just describe, they divide.

We still do it today.
We say church people and unchurched.
We say ready and not ready.
We draw lines that God never intended to exist.
But when you look at the heart of God, you see something different.
From the very beginning, God’s plan was always bigger than human boundaries. He told Abraham that all families of the earth would be blessed. Not some. Not the qualified. All.
By the time we arrive at John 3:16, we see it clearly. Whosoever.

That word changes everything.
Whosoever does not check your past.
Whosoever does not measure your worth.
Whosoever simply opens the door.

This is not God changing His mind. This is God revealing His heart.

Maybe today you feel like you do not measure up. Like you do not belong. Like you are standing close enough to see what God is doing, but too far to feel like it is for you.

But hear this clearly.
God never built that distance.
People did. Religion did. Fear did.
And Jesus came to tear it all down.

Ephesians 2 tells us that those who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. The wall did not get adjusted, it was broken. Completely.

That means there are no outsiders anymore. Only invited ones.
And here is where it gets personal.
The world measures your value by what you bring.
God measures your value by what He placed inside of you.
You may feel like nothing, but God saw something worth dying for.

Think about that.

Heaven does not invest casually. God came did not come for something worthless. The cross is your evidence of value. The nails declare your worth. The empty tomb confirms your future.

So if you feel like nothing today, do not stop there.
Ask yourself this. What did it cost God to make something out of me?

Because whatever feels empty in your life is not wasted. It is a place for God to move. A place for purpose. A place for transformation. This is your moment.
Not when everything is fixed. Not when you feel ready. But right now.

You do not clean yourself up to come to God. You come to God, and He changes you.
So do not stand outside what Jesus already opened.

Step past the label.
Step past the fear.
Step into grace.
Because in God’s hands, nothing has never stayed nothing for long.

Hi, I'm Ryan Vanderford, and I'm so glad you're here. For over a decade, I've had the incredible privilege of serving as the pastor of Hope Chapel, a community built on faith, love, and the belief that hope is never out of reach. Ministry is more than a calling for me. It's a daily reminder that God meets us right where we are. Through every season of life, the highs and the hard days, I've seen firsthand what hope can do in a person's heart, and that's what A Moment of Hope is all about. My prayer is that this little corner of the internet feels like a warm cup of coffee and an encouraging word from a friend. Whether you're walking closely with God or just beginning to find your way, you belong here. So pull up a chair. Let's find hope together.
